Swapping the Lead Acid Auxiliary Battery for any kind of Lithium Cell(s) Battery is the issue.
The dedicated charging system for the auxiliary Battery is designed for Lead Acid.
Its unlikely Mitsubishi would approve this change, so the warranty would be void.

Whatever flavour of Lithium Battery is safer is not relevant.
 
I had extended warranty till 90K and had no problem in obtaining warranty services at all. e.g. got the following warranty services as such.
1. The whole front axle was replaced by dealer for one leaking boot.
2. The front suspension system was replaced due to bad shock & broken dust boots replaced by third party paid for by the warranty service company.

Mitsubishi extended warranty never questioned the lithium battery at all. My 2018 PHEV is now over 92K miles. LiFePo4 12v battery in my PHEV has a built-in BMS chip inside to regulate any overcharging from the main battery pack. Other than the 10-12 EV miles, Happy camper!

The Outlander charging circuit will be designed for Lead acid, the charging V/I profile is very different to Lithium.

You run the risk of it catching fire.
It seems to be simply a constant voltage charger, it is not current limited to what the specification on the original yuasa battery recommends. No fancy profile there..
 
Wanted to thank this thread for helping me change my 12-volt battery from the Yuasa S46B24L(S) to an Optima D51R AGM on my 2018 SEL. It's been installed for about 2 days now and fit just fine. I'm here in the US and that original battery was near impossible to find.

Two words of caution
  1. The reason my original battery died was because I had a dash cam installed and for about 2-3 weeks, I did not drive my 2018 leading to what I surmise slowly drained the battery and in cold weather killed it. I attempted to trickle charge the dead battery to no avail. Therefore I will be disconnecting my dash cam whenever I leave my car idle for long periods or leave the car plugged to the wall charger.
  2. If you are in the US, avoid purchasing anything from www.sparkswarehouse.com. I should have researched it more but I was desperate to find an original S46B24L(S) and they seemed to be the only game in town with a express delivery. After the original online purchase two weeks ago, no status updates, no tracking number and no responses to calls and emails from me. I hope they get in touch with me soon but it may be the dead battery cost me much more than just a single replacement.

Re dash cams...

A good installer should have warned you about that risk.

Mine did, and recommended that I run the camera off a separate (supplied) lithium ion battery, when the car is powered down.

That battery only charges when the car is 'on' so I'm not running down the car's 12V.

I have a Blackview set of dashcams. (Front and rear.)

They are connected to a Blackview lithium ion battery, that is installed under the passenger seat. (About the size of a cigar box.)

That battery is connected to the vehicle power, via a fuse that is only 'on' when the vehicle is 'on'.

When I park the car, the vehicle power is 'off', but the cameras keep running, in 'parking mode'* until the Blackview battery is low. Once that battery is low, the cameras turn off.

This means that the cameras are not draining the car's 12V battery, because they are not connected to the car's power when the car is turned off.

Hence, they can't flatten the car's 12V battery.

This solution is recommended for cars like ours, because our 12V battery is so small, something like a camera could easily flatten the battery.


* I think parking mode means that recording is only saved if the camera registers an impact, but I'm not 100% on that. This probably uses less power than continuous recording, but, I'm guessing this part.

I also have a 2018 SEL. Was it hard to switch out the battery? I am in the US also and have a car with a dead battery sitting in my driveway. I'd rather not have ti towed to a dealer for this. Do you know if replacing the battery (not having a dealer do it) voids the warranty? Thanks for any advice.

Warranty will not be voided.

Should be pretty easy for your grandson to replace it.

Just need to find and buy the correct battery, as mentioned by murlandphev.

We have a great bunch of Members here. Always willing to help out when and where they can

In over 40 years of driving, I had never gone to the stealer for changing the 12v battery at double the price for the same thing. Get any compatible battery from any store on line or auto parts store and do it yourself, It is only a 10 min job, watch You tube if you have never done that before...a piece of cake.

My grandson is on the way to the dealer to pick it up with the old one in his trunk (In a cooler but the lid didn't close all the way). I am a little worried because of the vent tube which said explosive gas.... I hope gas is only released when it is operating. We will probably be done by the time this is moderated. But I am wondering if anyone can tell me more about it.

Giving it a try, but went with a battery from the dealer. At $294, not a bad price. Comparable to the alternatives available in the US--which arent' many)

the battery will only outgas when being charged or under heavy load so nothing to worry about there :)

I'm happy to report that the new battery is in and the car is running! Thanks to all the members here who helped me learn what was wrong and that it would be easy to fix..... I know I'm a slow learner!
