Discussion on how much the Battery Heats up while Charging

Hoping tgat this Thread can used to share some information on how much Battery Heating occurs while charging.

I have 2024 Outlander PHEV 20kWh and since the 2023 to 2025 Models no longer have a Battery Heater, many of us are wondering if charging the Battery will warm it enough go prevent the no start condition when the Battery Temperature drops lower than -25'C.

The following photos are to used solely as reference, since the outside Temperature was only -8'C, today.

For these photos a Level 2 Charger was used and the charging was started when the range left on the Battery was 4kms.

It is difficult to see how much the Batteries heat with Bar Graph of the Battery Temperature Screen but at -8'C it does not appear that Charging does not heat the Battrey very much. Perhaps a small amount.

Hope to see some photos of the Battery Temperature Screen When charging at temperatures lower than -20'C. but really interested to see them when Temperatures drop lower than -30'C.

Have you a thermal camera (TIC) you could use to see what the battery casing shows during charging up?

Not thought to do that on my 2019 so far and of course we've nothing as extreme as the temps you are operating under. The TIC I have is a Topdon TC001 plus which works pretty well on my android phone/tablet, more been used for overview of electronic boards and seeking a wee hedgehog's hiding place so far.

Your 2019 as well as all 2022 and older models do have a Battery Heater in the Battery Pack so tge Battery Thermal Management System works well, so heating of tge battery is not an issue.

The 2023 to 2025 Models no longer have a Battery Heater in the Battery Pack so these modelscare not AZ efficient in lower temperature operations and may fail as temperatures lower than -30'C.

My previous 2018 and 2022 worked fine at these temperatures

Just to add

I was able to drive 7 kms on EV Mode.

So at the Battery Temperature shown above, EV Mode worked fine.

The Heat Oump also worked and after a 15 minute drive tge vent Temperature reached a balmy 20'C, Cab Interior was 0'C at ghe end of my drive.
