Not strictly true. They run on their electric (high torque) motors and drive on fully engaged (front to back) 4 wheel drive using (as many 4x4’s now do) anti lock brake sensor technology to work out when traction is being lost and on which wheel to adjust drive effectively.You haven't looked under your car have you? There is no propellor shaft, and no transfer case. The rear diff contains an electric motor instead.
To be clear the PHEV has no gearing, no reduction range, and are totally incapable of high torque low speed 4WD. They are strictly townie 4WD for getting off wet grass.
