This just reinforces my gripe with them about the ridiculous sensitivity of the automatic lighting controller. I have bright DRLs that I didn't really want, and they still insist on turning on the headlights every time the sun pops behind a cloud!

OK call me a dinasour if you wish, but why can't you turn on your headlights when needed? The DRL's mean you dont have to worry about headlights until its dark(ish).

You're a dinasour [sic]! Automatic lights control is a great idea - I have forgotten to turn my lights on a few times on other cars and the risk is far greater with the Outlander because the dashboard is illuminated even with the lights off. But the least sensitive setting on the Outlander still turns them on far too early... The automatic wipers work far better - the sensitivity control has a decent range.

Anyone managed to find LED bulbs yet to replace the P13w bulbs in the standard daytime running lights??

Cheers

Chris

Plenty of LED alternatives on ebay - how's this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2Pcs-P13W-7-5W-Car-LED-Bulb-Fog-Light-DRL-Driving-Lamp-Headlight-White-/281397087203?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item418492cbe3

There is a post on one of the Phev forums about this - apparently all the ebay LEDs are far too large to fit

CJ

They are probably referring to the old style LED 'bulbs'. The later CREE types are not only smaller but far brighter too.

This thread explains the issues:

I don't know about the UK, mine came with combined Mitsubishi LED DRLs and fog lights fitted.

They are an optional extra here - we paid around £250 to have them fitted by the importer.

Sadly it's not that simple on the outlander. The bulb has a P13W socket but the aftermarket LED bulbs ar to big to fit in the housing. As far as I know nobody has found a LED bulb that fits, I have done a few attempts myself.
We had the same problem with our Nissan Leaf : aftermarket P13W LED bulbs would not fit and housings needed a lot of milling with a Dremel tool (or equivalent).Still expecting PHEV delivery, will post my own findings on this subject asap.

I've just done this today on my PHEV. Imo they look a lot better than standard.
These were the bulbs I used

I went for cheap ones because I didn't want to butcher good ones before I knew if they would fit. If (when) these fail I'll get some decent ones. I thought it would be the length that would be the problem, but it's the bit where the o-ring is that needs 'slimming' down.

Hi,

WOW! - they must be something VEEERY special.

I've just modified these to fit

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161133798953?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT#ht_4778wt_1088

The ones Razman posted look better. I didn't want to spend too much til I knew they would fit.

That's good to hear tennopz, how easy were they to modify? And any chance you can post some pics up? Before and after would be lovely (no smilie for this so 'whistle'!)

edit - two threads on the go with the same theme, now merged. Merged from "LED DRL's"

Not too bad to modify. Thought they might be too long, but its the bit where the o ring is that needs 'adjusting'. It's only plastic, so a dremel with a grinding/sanding bit did the job. Took about twenty minutes all in. You could probably do it with sandpaper if you havent got a dremel, just take a bit longer.
I'll post some pics when I work out how.

I have just taken a closer look at fitting CREE replacement 'bulbs' in the DRLs. The problem is purely down to the size of the hole in the light - anything over 17.5mm diameter simply won't go in, but there is also another size problem with the mounting boss (which has the O ring seal) and it would appear that all the CREE replacements use the same modules which are larger, and even the older SMD versions require some Dremel work to make them fit - here is a 'before & after' borrowed from a Nissan Leaf modding blog.

This might be a good compromise - COB version which gives a more diffused light

Another option might be to dismantle the OEM bulb and solder a smaller CREE bulb into the original base - something like the wedge type used in sidelights which has wire contacts (and therefore easily modified)

Has anyone made any progress in finding a suitable replacement yet?

Looking at the pic of the rubber-gloved Dremel man, when I did mine, I found I had to reduce the diameter of the plastic fitting below the O-ring as well. Otherwise it wouldn't go fully into the housing, and even then the O-ring had to be discarded.

I wonder why Mitsu went for such an odd-sized, non-standard fitting.

I managed to keep the o-ring, I left a 1 mm lip in front of the o-ring when I sanded the plastic down with the Dremel. It still fitted the housing.

Browsing on ebay and found these - not sure about the quality but maybe a cheaper/easier alternative to OEM prices.

They look nice and will most certainly fit, but unfortunately only have one bulb in them. So you either run them as Fogs or DRL's
