Hello. New to the forum.
Just picked up a used 2023 Outlander PHEV and I’m running into some trouble with the built-in TomTom GPS. It’s not calling out street names, and the camera alerts are totally MIA. Anyone else dealt with this?

Also, thinking about switching to Apple CarPlay for nav - worth it, or nah? Let me know your thoughts!

I use TomTom only because I don't want to hear any nav sounds, and now you come telling me you want to hear sounds from it, haha! That's funny! I haven't tried it, but considering CarPlay doesn't need a subscription, it might be a choice. But not for me.

I find Apple CarPlay smoother and more reliable for navigation, plus it is more intuitive if you are already using Apple Maps or Google Maps. If you don't mind using your phone for nav, I would say it is worth switching.

Haha, fair enough! Everyone’s got their faves, right? I thought the TomTom would be super easy to use, but now I'm having second thoughts. How's it been for you - still reliable without the audio prompts?

That’s good to know! Apple Carplay really is the way to go. Thanks, man!

Apple CarPlay is not a navigation system, it gives access to navigation systems you have installed on your phone. In my case I have Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze installed and I can select anyone of them from the Apple CarPlay Screen. I like Waze best because it gives alerts for red light cameras, speed traps and construction or obstacles on the road. The nice thing is all 3 are free other than using my data plan...but offline maps can be downloaded to avoid using my data plan. The only downside is you won't get the HUD map info on the windshield from CarPlay mapping. Big Plus...No Subscription Cost

I like the TomTom map for the zoom capability but it is not as accurate as using Apple Maps. I like tom tom for ability to view the turns on the HUD. However with Apple Maps my apple watch will give me a tap when a turn is upcoming negating the need for voice reminders. Right now I use Apple Maps for directions but keep the tom tom map on the display for an overview.

I have a 2023 PHEV purchased new in Oct 2023. The integrated TomTom may was outdated and I updated it shortly after purchasing my car. I tried to update the TomTom map in March 2024 and it was still way outdated.

I liked the TomTom in the event we were in a location with no cell service and I forgot to download an offline map for an area we were traveling in on my Google Maps. I also liked the integration with the HUD unit.

Normally I use Google with my Android Auto WiFi connection to the car.

You are right! I thought it wasn't necessary to specify that for him. I don't think I confused him in any way.
