Hello,

I need some help and advice please. My dad has a 64 plate Outlander PHEV. He was driving when the car just stopped. At first he thought it had run out of petrol but it appears that the tank has sufficient fuel in it.
The symptoms are that the 'driving' battery is empty and although the ICE is running, pressing the accelerator does nothing, doesn't rev the engine or drive the wheels. If the battery is charged the vehicle does move. When the car is started the ICE starts straightaway.
The car is currently in an independent garage as the only Mitsubishi dealer in the area who answered the phone is quoting three weeks before they can look at it. They have said they would describe the exhaust fumes as quite smoky.

Any ideas what the issue could be or any suggestions to fix it?

Regards and thanks in advance,

Stephen

OK...

The first thing to note, is that the engine cannot directly drive the wheels at speeds below 80 km/h, so you wouldn't expect the engine to move the vehicle from rest.

Starting up, the car always initially moves because of power being applied by the electric motors.

From your description, I'd assume that the engine is not spinning the generator fast enough to provide sufficient power to the electric motors hence the car cannot move with a flat drive battery.

Smoking exhaust can have many causes, and the colour of the smoke is an indicator, for instance white smoke could indicate coolant in the oil or cylinders, black/blue smoke is typically an indication that the car is running too rich (too much petrol).

With modern cars, that kind of fuel problem can be caused by broken sensors or a fuel pump that is delivering too much fuel. The lack of any response to the accelerator pedal could be as simple as a broken switch/sensor on the pedal itself.

Usually these issues would be diagnosed by looking at all the fault codes stored in the various computers in the car, via a diagnostic computer tablet.

Other than visually inspecting all the wiring for signs of damage, there's really not much you can do without diagnostic equipment.

If you start the car and immediately select 'Charge' is the car able to move then?

For those not in GB, "a 64 plate" means a 2014 Model Year.

Sounds like the drive battery may have had it. If you can't plug it in to charge it, I would leave it in Charge mode for a while until you get about 1/2 battery capacity again and then see what happens.
