thanks for the tips everyone. Fitted the Ring Ultra Xenon HB3's at the weekend, having done the LED sidelights previous weekend. The main beam lights are a great upgrade and very simple to switch bulbs.
I'm on a 3 year company car lease so still struggling with £250 for the DRL's...hoping a decent aftermarket LED bulb will appear soon.

has anybody fitted a light bar or additional high beams to the car?
I had to go to Sweden yesterday evening to rescue a friend who had a flat tire on his BMW and had to drive on country roads in really crappy weather. The high beams are upgraded with Philips night breaker + but they are still not good enough. So no I'm back to thinking about fitting a light bar in the lower aperture of the front bumper but I'm a bit concerned about the PHEV's electronics and what they make of it.. on a normal car it wouldn't be a problem but I'm a bit reluctant given that it's a complicated car to begin with and adding another electric component may interfere with other systems of the car.

I have tried fitting aftermarket HID to the high beams, and the car was unable to supply enough start current and they would not fire up properly. I had thought I had blown a fuse, but the original lamps still worked. I will be investigating a relay control option with a fused line direct from the battery. I will be looking at other light options as I do a lot of country night driving and it would be a shame to mess up the front of the PHEV with a Kangaroo or Wombat or Red Buffalo.

The LED options are looking better all the time.

PS I will be looking at a LYP replacement for the accessories battery to help out with the additional current, including the fridge.

Hi Driving in the dark country roads of Sweden I had to do something about the almost non existing hi beams.
So i fitted a nudge/light bar with 3 Hella lights.

The result was fantastic but a bit expensive

The bar is bolted to the beam in front of the radiator and there are no extra holes in the car.
The feed cable is routed under the car to the 12 v battery and there are some fuses and relays

How about these? Quicker start-up time than HID and less power consumption than halogen - certainly looks promising, and not too pricey Not sure if the huge heatsink will fit in our headlamps though.

No, since there are no ACC and FCM on my car.
In Sweden the ACC and FCM are an extra "Safety pack" option.

Mine is a high level "Business Nav" with all options except the ACC, FCM and LDW. The safety pack which only consist of the ACC, FCM and LDW cost 2000 euros, not worth the money, I think...

I think I saw those on a James Bond car - you switch to main beam and vaporise the car in front!

Thanks for the links thinking of doing both the main beam and the side lights....does anyone know if the Ring ones (120% claimed) are significantly better than the cheaper osram (110%)?

Also has anyone found a good quality drl led alternative to the dealership ones yet that just fits with no modification?

I've got the Ring ultra and my hunch is the Osram's would be just as good from other comments. The Ring ones online were £19 thus the same price as the Nightbreakers I found.

Also has anyone found a good quality drl led alternative to the dealership ones yet that just fits with no modification?

I am currently waiting for a pair of CREE bulbs which should do the trick - I will post details when I get them.

Meanwhile I popped one of these little beasts in my reverse light - I can finally see where I am reversing now!

Answer to some questions above about FCM... Posted this earlier in the other thread about extra hedlight.

Hi

I have now mounted some extra lights. Have tested them on a couple of trips, they sure add "some" additionally lights ....

This is 4 NBB Alpha 225 converted with 60w Xenon with speed start ballast. They start in max 5s the first time and instantly when they are warm. The two in the middle are pencil beams and the other two are wide beams.
I have also converted the standard halogen high beam to 60w Xenon.

The mounting point is custom made due to the FCM, it’s radar is placed behind the red marking.

If someone is interested then I can also post pictures on how I mounted switches and relays.

Other lamp mods I made:
Fog lights -> LED
DRL -> LED
Parking lights-> LED
Numberplate back -> LED
Reversing light -> Bright power LED

So thanks for all the tips and advice. The update on the main beam went well in the right without any issues, but when doing the left I dropped the screw and it fell to the bottom of the engine bay I think. I can not find it, not sure what to do really. Think I need to take it to a garage for them to open the bottom and find it?

Any advice or help would be great. Thanks
