I have access to electricity whilst I am in France. Do I just use the normal travel adapter to plug it in.

I have a cable that attaches a 3 pin socket to a cable to atach to a camping hook up. I presume I could use this also whilst on camp sites.

Otherwise I suppose i have to run on petrol in charge mode on the motorways and then use the battery in the towns and villages.

To be sure, maybe you should check if the adapter get hot while charging...
Lukewarm is fine but it shouldn't get hot.

I don't know if I'm overly cautious about my old house, but the first time I charged at home I checked the wiring where it is accessible...

I would certainly be careful with the cheap adaptors sold in airport departure lounges - they do not inspire confidence. We used to travel to Spain a lot and made up a couple of our own adaptors by connecting a high quality continental plug to a high quality UK trailing socket with a short length of thick cable - we are confident of their capacity (and the polarity is maintained )
