Wheel alignment on a '64 4hs

Hello, have searched but not found the answer, I hope that this isn't just poor searching

I've uneven tyre wear on the outside of one wheel, so thought I should get the tracking checked and replace the wheel.

Two tyre places have refrained from looking at the tracking as the 'ACC and LDW would need recalibrate which only a dealer can do'.

I called the dealer who said they don't even have tracking equipment and as the sensors are in the windscreen and bumper there would be no need to recalibrate.

Has anyone else come across this?

Your dealer is right. The sensor for LDW is a "camera" on the windscreen and the ACC and FCM are by a radar sensor behind the grill. Nothing to do with wheels or tyres. Look for a tyre place that has any notion of their profession. Or ask your dealer for a recommendation. Many dealers farm tracking out to a trusted specialist.

Thanks, the dealer did have a suggestion but they are twenty miles from home and their recommendation was a long way on the other side.

Will try to find someone nearer to home; am I looking for someone with a Hunter?

You need to find a specialist who can do a whole car, laser guided geometry check. Tracking, caster, camber and trailing angles. I first had this done when my car was 3 months old and in totally transformed the car. So much so that I have recently renewed my 2 year ‘as many checks as I need’ contract.

The check and adjusting both ends will cost about £80 but the benefits of even tyre wear, better ride and handling are worth it. I get mine done just after every 12500miles service, so roughly 3 times a year.

We had a Mazda5 which are known for chewing through rear tyres unless they were properly aligned. The local branch of a big tyre firm wouldn't/couldn't do the full alignment and sent me to an accident repair place just up the road. I went back every year as it was cheaper than buying new tyres!

As I come from Luton, I use Tyre City at the top of Waller Avenue, over the road from the BMW dealer.

Tracking was well out so took out the two year checks deal to reduce damage on the new tyres

Its not about poor searching actually wheel alignment is very tough job so thats why online tips for wheel alignment is limited
