Transmission leak

I'm no expert but overfilling a transmission can cause problems. With 5 quarts instead of 1.6 the excess oil may have moved to parts of the transmission it should not have been and caused damage. Also, the leak could have been caused purely by overfilling. Presence of fibres at the filter also seems odd - not clear from photos but this could be debris from a plastic part that has been scored/worn.
The report looks professional and I would not get caught up in their describing part of it as a CVT as a measure of their skills and knowledge - to be fair, it does sound like a CVT, it is rather unique, and how else should we expect them to describe it in layman terms (please no debate on this as it is just my opinion).

They’ve been the most helpful of all the shops. Really frustrating a new transmission is that expensive. If it were RAV4 Prime I’m told it’d be less than half the cost. Initial dealership is beyond awful so I’ll have to report them for recourse.

The Mitsubishi stealer in LA area recommended tranny services as well but I told him there is no transmission in the PHEV but only transfer gear! My local mechanic told me no need to change the oil, he checked it for me.

oh dear, so the place that serviced it put 3x the amount of oil. That would likely cause overpressure in the system and could easily result in oil being forced past the shaft seals. Much the same if you grossly overfill the engine oil where it can get forced past the piston rings and cause problems. Can't say how it might have affected the transfer gear/clutch operation. Lucky its a wet clutch so oil contamination isn't an issue.

Fluff caught in the filter makes you wonder, was that from the original place wiping it off and not caring they left fibres on it, or placed it where it picked up lint and didn't check before refitting? Any hydraulic valves in the system may be affected if some got into them and was trapped, not good.

Worth getting the all degreased and see if the oil leaks continue now the level is correct and if the system settles over a short period of use. You'll then be able to know there's a leak and a better idea of where. escaped oil may still be trapped in any gaiters which are part of the system (if any) so they'll need to be cleared and cleaned also.

Sounds like your main recourse against the original service place would be to approach their service manager then maybe the CEO with the report and then if no redress go to Mitsu and lodge a complaint. Whether they'd stump up for a replacement drive system I can't say, depends how much they value their reputations.

Thanks. Left message with service and emailed CEO last month. Not so much as a reply.
