The car won't let me use the strongest regen brakes when I'm in electric mode. I don't understand why. I found a way to use them anyway, but I'm still curious why it's set up this way.

You must be driving a 2023 or newer Model.

I drive a 2024 and for the life of me, I see absolutely no reason for the newer Models to do this and truly believe it is either Software glitch or bad programing.

I previously owned a 2018 and 2022 and I had no problem using Regen with B3, B4 or B5 independent of the Battery Level.

The explanation that has been given is that while the Battery has 55% of Battery power or Higher that the Engine spins to disapate the extra charge but this makes absolutely no sense because when driving at say 50km/h and Regen Pedal is moved from B0 to B1 the car slows down, on B2 slows down further but once it is moved to B3, the ICe starts but the car does not slow down any further, nor does it slow down in B4 or B5, so that explanation is incorrect.

You say that you found a way to use B3 B4 or B5 without the ICE kicking in. Please share.

Only way I found to use stronger regen level above B3 is to fo so when the Battery state is lower than 55%

Given that the entire design of the PHEV is around protection of the battery, then it might be that after 10 years of real life usage Mitsu have discovered that too high a regen charge to a battery more than half "full" is not good for its long term health?

On my 2018 and 2022 Models, when the Drive Battery was full or near full the charging to the Battery from Regen was zero at full or limited, regardless of what the Regen Level was requested and the ICE never kicked in. On my 2024, while the Battery level is above 55% full, whenever the B3 is engaged the ICE starts up and does not turn off on it's own. This is not normal and I still believe that it is either a glitch of the software or the parameters incorectly programmed.

Once the ICE starts "spinning" as some Members mention, once I accelerate, the ICE does Rev up even if I half a full or near full battery. This is not correct when compared to the pre 2023 Models.

Also, even when the motor "spins" and B5 is selected with the ICE running, the car does not slow down which indicates to me that at this point there is no Regenerative Braking going on at all. Thus confirming my suspicion that that the ICE is starting up for no reason at all.

It has been speculated that the engine powers up to allow 'engine braking'.

On my model, when you run out of room in the battery, regenerative braking instantly ceases to function.

This can be quite disconcerting on a long, twisty, mountain descent, trust me on this.

Perhaps Mitsubishi decided that was too risky and decided to use the engine for braking when regen cannot work anymore?
