Rattling Noise Inside Rear of PHEV – Need Advice

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out to see if anyone has experienced a similar issue with their PHEV. I have a new PHEV, and there's a persistent rattling noise coming from the rear interior of the vehicle. The sound resembles a loose screw jumping around inside a trim panel and hitting the metal body.

I've tried removing all loose items from the boot, took out the luggage cover bar, and checked every corner, including the seat belts, but I haven't been able to pinpoint the source of the noise.

This noise is so disturbing that it's affecting my driving experience, and I'm starting to regret purchasing this car. If anyone has experienced a similar problem or has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your insight.

Have you removed both hatch covers in the floor of the boot?

(The rear one opens easily, but the front needs a little more help.

Otherwise, you could try look inside the panels via the access hatches on the side walls.

To isolate the location, you could try get someone to ride in the back seat while you drive the car, particularly if you can find a route that always generates the noise.

I had similar experience with other car. It took a long time to find out the cause of rattling but it was a small screw in the hollow bar under the front seat. There was no way to get it out. So I sprayed gap filler, which expands by itself to hold it.
It is not recommended for you to find it while you driving the car. So, you need other person to listen to the noise and locate the source of the noise while you driving. Rattling sound sometimes coming from nowhere.

I seem to recall reports in the early days of the seat belt clip knocking against the door pillar!

If the car has ever had a rear shunt, then broken glass granules inside the hatch can be very annoying.

You have reminded me, I want to inspect my rear panels with a snake camera, because my tool kit looks like it may be missing items, and I can imagine them having fallen inside the panel.

I took my car to the dealer, and after a few test drives, they believe the rattle noise is coming from the back end of the sunroof. They said they need to pull down the roof lining for further investigation, but they haven’t scheduled any time for the job yet. Every morning, I hope the noise will be gone, but instead, it’s just getting worse. I’m totally frustrated with the dealership and their service.

I had this problem when some absolute toerag smashed my driver side window. When it was replaced by the insurance company there were glass fragments left inside the door panel. Basically I had to put up with it until they broke up enough to be vacuumed out at the drain points as I wasn't pulling the panel apart again. I then had the same joy again when the back window spontaneously shattered while I was sitting stationary in the driveway. There were bits of glass in in the rear boot panel that rattled about until I pulled off the panel covers and spent a lot of time vacuuming every nook and cranny I could get into.

I may have gaffer taped my phone to various parts of a car once (I wasn't going to put a person in the boot of a sedan). I pressed record and verbally said the location. Then I repeated this with the phone in various places. I used the same piece of road. It took 20 mins, and I isolated the noise being the loudest in the left rear. After opening a cubby hole, I found the famously elusive 10mm socket. Not mine until that moment.

I would suggest getting 3 phones mounted perpendicular to each other so that the stereo microphones on all 3 combined could map out a 3d space which an app could analyse to pinpoint noises. Probably doesn't exist, but should.

I have the exact same issue. Brand new 2024 PHEV exceed. Rattle sound coming from rear of the sunroof.

If I press the palm of my hand against the sun roof glass when driving the rattle disappears. I have mine booked in for repair at Suttons chullora in two weeks.

Apparently its a pain to fix. The whole headlining needs to be removed.

To be honest I hate sun roofs. They are more trouble than they are worth. If I had a choice I would not have it.
