Hi I have some sort of unit on the off side of a rhd 2015 phev which has a cracked pipe from the accident damage. Looks to be a vent or an input to air , some sort of cushioned airbox inside the inner wing. , it also runs a pipe thru the bulkhead

I wondered if it was a vacuum pump? And what the thin black box in the wing is called In the inner wing as the connector has snapped.

Has a label on it saying high temp.

Thanks

The box is a vacuum reservoir. I split mine by pushing the mudguard/fender against a post while leaving a parking spot.
Results in lack of power assist to brakes, until the pump manages to build up vacuum again.

And the pump runs whenever needed, not just on start. Remember, no ice so no engine vacuum
Hmmm

So are you saying that anyone driving their PHEV in warm weather on just EV for 3 months at a time without the ICE ever Staring up is driving without brakes?

I assure you that the ICE does not need to start to allow us to use our Brakes.

Remember that our PHEV can Operate in 3 Modes

1) Pure Electric
2) Series - ICE runs to charge Battery
3) Parallel - I powers the fronts wheels with Rear Whhel Electfic Assist when needed.

It's a similar idea to many diesel vehicles without intake vacuum, a small engine driven vacuum pump provides vacuum for the brake servo, only on the Mitsubishi It's driven by an electric motor, it cycles on and off as needed, I've just had a look at one for my mates Volvo diesel PHEV, £1500 @ Volvo for the part.

"No ENGINE Vacuum" - as the source of vacuum.

i.e. An Electric pump is used to generate vacuum.

no, i'm saying becuase it doesnt have engine vacuum 'most of the time' it uses the electric vacuum pump with reservoir instead.

whether the engine vacuum supplements the electric pump or not i dont know.

ah so I need a new vacuum reservior too then and mine is split at where the hose joins - might be the reason for my 'brake service attention required' message and no servo assist on the brakes

Depending on the type of plastic it maybe possible to weld it? Sometimes genuine parts are surprisingly "cheep" and not worth the time fixing them AND Sometimes they are ridiculous! Lots of bits for the PHEV on Ebay?

ah so mine is a 2015 mk3 so the 2.0 - either way I think my pump works ok, it does try to build pressure when the car starts up, the part number of the unit I need is this thing - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176224273098 - but im not paying £90 for a plastic box with a nipple on it. so I did the right thing and bought one for a RR sport instead as it was a tenner, for a plastic box with a nipple on it, which seems like more appropriate pricing - hopefully that fixes it
