GAS/FUEL TANK CAPACITY - 2020 MODEL

If memory serves, the manual for the car also states this.

Mellobob, probably. But whatever useful information the manual contains is offset by a errors, omissions, and poor readaibility. For instance, the manual I received with my 2023 states that the WiFi connection works (it doesn't, and won't ever, and the instructions are wrong), is opaque about how to get the car into manual for towing, and is written in protect-the-manufacturer style, not help-the-owner style. Even the dealer does not have wonderful things to say about the manual. **sigh**. Thank &deity for informed users in fora like this.

I live near Niagara Falls and my daughter and 2 grand kids were visiting from Halifax but stayed overnight with friends in Brampton about 130km away. I went to pick them up knowing that I would have to use gas to get there and and back and while I started with a full battery charge ( 21k) and about half a tank of gas the guess-o-meter (for the lack of a better word) indicated I could go just over 420 km so in my head I had sufficient gas to do the 260 km there and back home which we did but.....

The minute we pulled into the driveway one grand kids noticed he had left his Omni Pod ( for diabetes) and was needing it urgently, so after dropping the rest off, my daughter asked for the car and immediately left going all the way back.

Needless to say hat when she returned she was exhausted saying the the fuel gage kept tell her to fill up as both the battery was showing --- and fuel --- ( both out) before I could fill up I charged the battery to get to the gas station) and when I did fill the tank it took 38.2L. According to the manual it should have taken 43L.
Anyone experience something similar. I know the tank was empty , it was flashing like m

Only she can answer that. I asked the same question and she said she did not know how to open the filler cap AND just wanted to get home to sort out her sons omnipod.
Of course I just wanted to know what the real capacity of my gas tank is and this was a pretty good exercise though unplanned for

Hmm. Full charge and 1/2 tank does not equal 420km…. I fill my 2020 and full charge gives me 500ish km. You should have sensed something wrong with this picture (GUESSometer)).

When i go on a road trip I always throw a small gas jug (2.8 Us gallons 9.6l) in the rear for backup. Don't bother with charging on the road not worth it. Put gas jug in double garbage bags. I have used it twice in 4 years. Once in winter travel highway shutdown for 4 hours due to accident (I don’t like the cold) and one summer trip when I thought I would see how far I could go. Alert came on, guesso at 60 km, then went to 0km on guesso then another alert. Had 30 km to go and I gave in and pulled off hi-way rather than create an emergency pullover….

Bottom line is 450-500km range is not enough in when travelling in Western Canada (BC).

I always take the extra effort to top up to max when traveling longer distances. I can get up to13!!!!! additional liters in after initial stop of the pump. Never experienced any issue....

I have done the same in winter time whenever I have a Gas Coupon.

In the summer time I like to keep my tank around half full especially since I get the nagging "Add 20 Liters" Message every 3 months, on my 2024 - GT.

Thanks guys for our input.
First of all on my model there is no lever on the floor next to the driver's seat. There is around button in an obscure position on the dash on the side of the steering wheel
The arrow on the gauge just shows what side the the tank is filled from, no record of tank capacity
I understand the principle of say 1 gallon out of a 11 gallon still in the tank laying at the bottom but wondering what sort of 'pump' would there be to carry it to the carb or injector.
Either way I just don't believe that my tank holds 43L and will stick to my assumption of it to be around 40L or less so when I see that I am averaging 8.5L/100km my range should be around 475km or at the most less than 500km. Anyway I personally will ensure that I will never let my tank be less than a quarter because there is no way I want to run out especially on any highway even though I am a CAA member where in an emergency they will bring me some gas to get me going.
All this was a good experience for me

Hi Bruce, we have a 2020 SE, with 158000km (over 500 fill ups) and have only once topped the tank up with 42l at 560km trip odometer, during summer.

Like others have reported here, we too have the electronic release button on the dash.

Our Alert generally goes off when the range is down to 60km.

Worst incident was driving to Calgary, wee hours, Stat Holiday. With the low fuel alert, we went from 50km range to a loud Alarm and Flashing --- km, and still had 21km left to get to our hotel. Google Maps told us the nearest open gas station was near the BC border, but I won't rant about Artificial Ignorance here.
When we got into NE Calgary it took 40l, so I calculated we had about 35km more range, and have kept dialled in with that knowledge.

We generally fill up whenever we get near 100km range. At 100km it takes about 34l-35l before topping up. Topping up for us is about 1.5-2l before hearing it in the fill tube but before overflowing (did that once, maybe 100ml, sorry Costco). All the math comes back to match up with the 43l/11.3gUS

Don't drain your tank. Two biggest issues are sludge, which gums up fuel filter and injectors, or worse killing your fuel pump which usually in the gas tank and expensive to replace. You might get away with it a few times, or it might break down first try depending on your fuel quality.

Correct, the fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and it is cooled by the surrounding fuel. When the fuel gets very low the pump loses it cooling fluid and starts to run hotter. This reduces the pump life.

Robert, Just a brief explanation of what I do.
I am retired and most of my driving (yes most ) , so what I do is when I fill my tank I set my trip gauge to zero. Whenever I go out locally I may do 20km or less. I come home and whether my battery is half or below be it morning, noon or night I plug it in.
Once a week we go to Beamsville ( 65km round trip or roughly 260 km over a month) and because of my other short runs (apart from when we go beyond like the airport or which is not too often except during this holiday season, I can clock up to 1000 km on a tank (without running out ) because I fill up at the most once in the month or more as my consumption is based on how much traveling I do AND the price of gas , which fluctuates between $1.58 and $1.35 and if I see my tank is low(ish) I fill up.
So yes I save money on gas because MOST of the timeI top ou my battery even though the mileage is poor.

GSDCanada, wow 158,000Km and still going strong I guess. I concur with your comments and maybe I do have +- 43 but I wont try it out especially in winter. I freak out if I see my gas tank getting too low. In summer I have already booked my car in to have the batteries 'balanced' to try and get me more battery milage from the current 20 to around 35. but either way I use my car as a Hybrid.

Here's a picture of the pump from Ebay, you can see the pump is actually contained within the outer housing that holds fuel, anything below half a tank is cooled by the trapped fuel that remains, even after you've run out.
