From the economy point of view, I think you would be hard pressed to detect any difference. Set it the way that feels natural to you.

I find D or maybe occasionally B3 works nicely on the 'engine braking' front.
I only increase the braking effect/regen when descending long hills both to control the speed and maximise the regen.

Depends what you mean by "town driving" - with our 20mph speed limits, long inclines towards the Thames and generally stop-start driving, here in Sarf Lundun, I find I can coast a lot of the time in B0 paddling up to get "engine braking" when I need to slow down/stop. I find it easier than trying to "feather" the accelerator to get the same effect with the higher B settings.

But its really down to your local traffic conditions and your own driving style - so trial & error to find out what suits you.

Exactly the way I use it. I think that is the way Mitsubishi meant the car to be driven, as they incorporated fast access to B3 and B5 in the "gear control"

As long as you can coast (or hit the brake pedal only very lightly) it makes not much of a difference. When you need to slow down faster, higher B setting means more power regeneration and consequently less use of friction brakes.
