The Outlander is full time 4 wheel drive, electric motors front and back. There is no time that is becomes front wheel drive only. Also there is no mechanical coupling between the front and rear wheels (drive shaft) like a standard 4 wheel drive, it's all controlled by the computer talking to the two electric motors.

Proof from today morning:

Excellently sorted. Thanks for the riveting video.

Near the end of last winter (it was like Feb of this year), we got about 4" of snow and it froze over here (about -15°C). By "here" I mean, Seattle. Unlike most of the parts of the country where they have "real winter" (plains states and the Northeast), we have some actual mountain ranges (think European Alpine conditions). When it snows in Seattle, stuff comes to a halt for most people.

On the other hand, crazy folks that we are and ever gluttons for punishment, we volunteered to act as emergency Ubers for the family during this time.

My kids were completely blown away as my wife went up and down major hills and zipped around town without slipping nor slowing down. She's the speed-demon in the family; I drive the truck so I'm just slow.

We love this car. We used to own Subarus and Isuzu 4x4s. But nothing's quite like an Outie PHEV for Seattle and environs. It's kind of the perfect car for this terroir and this moment in time.

My understanding is that the rear motor only gets enough power to overcome the losses, not actively propel the vehicle. Unless in 4WD Lock.
