It seems quite difficult in the UK to get hold of a replacement rear exhaust silencer for my 2014 PHEV. Is this an unusual phenomenon or is this now the case for other makes of car too, as the manufacturers don’t expect the car to last any longer than the exhaust?

Pretty much every exhaust listed to fit that I’ve been able to find a picture of doesn’t appear to be the correct item. There seem to be three options for a new system currently available online, but with no photographic evidence of what you might get.

1) On Ebay a complete system available for £450 (from Click Car Parts) - it’s a bit vague, just a diagram of the system - the rear silencer looks to be the right shape. Doesn’t say what it’s made of. Could be the answer though. The list of models of PHEV it apparently fits has the wrong engine size stated for the post 2018 models. 2) Tony Banks Exhausts based in Leeds which makes a stainless replacement, but no picture. 3) I’ve also seen the recommendation on the forum for Infinity Exhausts who are based in Gloucestershire, but no pictures of what they’ve made for the PHEV. Possibly a fourth - a suggestion that Mitsubishi can get a system (maybe) for over £500. No mention or photos anywhere on the internet for a Genuine Mitsubishi system though. I remember seeing a diagram of one but it was in the USA. and around $600 for just the silencer. It wouldn’t be cost effective to get one from the US though.

The only silencers I’ve seen pictured that are definitely correct are used, expensive and in worse condition than mine. The problem seems to be on top of the silencer where there are some kind of welds - possibly spot welding? - I’m not sure, but the rot is always at this location and quite severe. Looks as though maybe it rots from the inside out.

As can be seen in the pictures of mine I have tried to look after it over the years and as it’s very easy to remove (only one nut and it’s off) I have done this sometimes to clean it. It's still rotted though. Done just over 50,000 miles now. It doesn’t yet blow from the most severe rotted bit but I think it’s only a matter of time. I don’t know if perhaps a plate could be welded across the top of the whole top seam to make it last a bit longer.

Does anyone know if the silencer fitted to the post 2018 models with the 2.4 litre motor is the same as the earlier 2.0 litre version on a 2014 GX4h? I’ve seen a photo of a 2020 PHEV silencer which has a different ‘ridged’ design to the top of the silencer body but did look a similar shape. I saw the post from MrPastry that gives the rear silencer an Item number: 13542 and part number: 1571B651. I’m thinking it could be an option to obtain a late model silencer from a breaker - but not if they want £300 for it. Wouldn't be my preferred option to buy used though.

I’m guessing my other choice might be to get a local exhaust specialist to make one - I can only guess that if someone makes custom stainless systems, as with the two specialists listed on Ebay - then any exhaust specialist could make one for any vehicle.

I've never in the past had any other car for which it appears to be so complicated to get an exhaust system/silencer for, and I wouldn’t want to find myself having to get hold of one quickly if mine falls off at the front, which is apparently not unknown.
