Andy, the battery cooling operates a fan and aircon vaporizer for battery temperatures above 35°C (95F). You can see it operating in the Energy Monitor on the MMCS. It only operates when the car is turned on or been charged externally. We had 45°C (113F) last summer with the battery having around 40C (104F). As soon as I turned off the car the cooling turned off too and started again when I plugged in the car for charging.
If you can do some more measurements with the car been driven after a full charge and then let it rest for a few hours. Curious if there is anything happening to the aux bat during this rest time after the initial drive...
