Assume a journey is started with a full fuel tank and a full overnight charge of the battery. At some point after the start of the journey the petrol engine engages, but only to drive the generator, not to provide drive power to the front wheels.

Assuming that the vehicle is driven at the relevant speed limits and that the interior tempreture is set at 22C which implies that either the heater or the air-conditioning is active, what range could be expected in such a scenario? And what would the main factors be in either increasing or decreasing that range? Or this a question without an answer - like how long is a piece of string....?

Depends on driving style, speed, traffic conditions, outside temperature, day or night, rain, type of road, flat or hilly, etc. Anything between 15 and 55 Km.

Q. Does the generator driven by the ICE provide sufficient charge to the Li-ion to power the vehicle continuously on electrical power only at city-speeds?

The parallel mode is possible over 55 kmph so below that it`s always series mode (ICE to generator to motor). So slow driving on very steep winding roads can be very noisy with a flat battery.
But on the other hand in constant speed the series mode can be possible up to almost top speed.

Normaly the car is very quit and you can`t hear of feel the changes in driving modes, you just sees it in the display.
 
The ICE at WOT will make 87Kw/116HP.
Each electric drive motor will make 60KW/80HP each . A best of 160HP to the ground when on 100% electric drive.
When the batteries are dead and if I understand this correctly. There would be a max of 87Kw/116HP to the move the vehicle minus electric accessory loads.
Stay off the long steep hills when the vehicle is loaded and the batteries are low. Vehicle has a max gross weight of 2310KG/5094lbs , 500KG/1100lbs of that payload, passengers etc.
Surprisingly a 1500KG/3300lb trailer is allowed if equipped with brakes.
 
In normal driving the batteries get drained down to 20% and will retain the charge. If the power demand exceeds this situation there is a 7% reserve to keep the vehicle driving normally. That would be a VERY long steep hill, as the car will be charged up as soon as the incline lessens.
When the battery reaches 13 % the car will go into safety mode, which means it will be running on limited power (below 70 kph with the generator running) and ICE only. A turtle will display on your display. This is a very rare occurence, and despite Dutch people being in the habit of dragging 1500 Kg Caravans through the Alps has been reported only once (and only because they ran out of petrol).
So no worries there.
Th only complaint one might have is the elevated engine noise due to the ICE providing maximum power in serial mode from time to time. On the upside, that means more than 300 Nm of torque. :D

Mitsubishi specs give the max gradient as 12% fully loaded and while pulling a 1500kg load. I can't recall any gradients in the Alps that were more than 12% so I am not surprised that this is "...a very rare occurence..." as stated by Jaapv.
