I need to protect the cargo space of my new PHEV from my 1 year-old pointer puppy. When I ordered the car back in May I thought a simple dog guard would suffice (and added it to the order) but the 'little dear' now has the habit to beat his paws on the side windows and trim whenever I leave my existing Volvo V70. He's not aggressive, just energetic and already 30kg! I can see the PHEV's interior trim suffering big-time with this treatment and want to avoid it. The car's one of the many which docked last week and should be with me soon :D

My favoured cage / crate is from Barjo and they advertise ones for the Outlander but not specifically the PHEV with its slightly different floor. Also, doesn't the rear (middle?) shoulder belt emerge from the roof on the left side? Clearly, the best plan is to wait to get the car then measure carefully and/or visit suppliers, but as they want 4-8 weeks to manufacture I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone's already got a solution. I have an email in with Barjo asking about the PHEV specifically but there may well be other makes that do a good job too.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I take it you are UK based? I have a Collpress dog cage in my PHEV, made by Bob Collins. He's North West based so depending on where you are, a visit to him and he'll measure up and make one to fit. They are around £400 though. Usually his lead times are around a week. They are made of plastic with welded seams and aluminium gate, so the whole thing is light and easy to clean.
I always use cages in my cars, they keep the dogs safe, you can open the boot in hot weather and no damage.

Great advice - many thanks! I hadn't seen them despite internet searches. I'm in Oxford, BTW.

Cheers, Andy

If you shop around, there are fitting dog benches available in pet shops.

Oh, my cat would hate it! He sits on the passenger seat, good as gold... He and I came to the boat on our own yesterday night and we had to take a long detour because of an accident on the main road - the poor thing got travel sick but he still was well behaved.

Savic & Trixie Car Dog Crates - Car Crate Type : B3 (ref- Savic Narrow 76) from Canineconcepts

works for me - and it leaves nearly half the boot space for luggage..
suits my Border Collie OK...

Thanks, DavidG, very helpful! Looking at the canineconcepts web site I'm wondering if the slightly bigger Type B4 (91cm long, 71 high, 61 wide) will still go in without folding seats. If you have the chance to measure, I'd really appreciate it! These crates at about £60 look to be great value and quality; the Barjo custom built job (albeit full width which I'd like to avoid to get more storage) are 10x the price!

Cheers, Andy

They are not as solid as the £400 ones but that's over the top for what is required
The Savic one I have folds flat and has a plastic base tray - this is a bit slippery so I added a "vet bed" cut to size and velcroed in the corners so she does not slide around.
The b4 will be just too long - even with the seat backs in the first position mine only has a few cm clearance at the top - the rear is sloping and I would have liked one slightly higher as my collies ears just touch the top when she sits - she has been fine for journeys up to 3 hours with a short comfort break.
I usually have my back seats on position 4 (of 6) for comfort and the crate fits perfectly.

I can add a photo tomorrow when it gets light.
