So i am on a road trip with my family and suddenly a loud roaring started in the car. Its deafeningly loud. I stopped to check and it isnt from the engine itself it seems but from next to the engine.

we are not talking a hum or growl, its roaring so loud we have to plug our ears and the whole car vibrates when it goes up a hill.

no warning lights, no other problems, it drives as normal. I was in charging mode when it happened

it also does it in when idling in neutral, its directly linked to the ICE running
it seems to come from this side

If it is loud enough for you to need to cover your ears, my first thought is damage to the engine or exhaust system.

Can you only hear it when the engine is running?

Did you hit something before the noise started?

If the connection between the engine pipes and the exhaust pipe has come undone, that can be really loud.

Similarly if the exit manifold has been damaged in some way.

Waaaaay back in the day, when I used to play with engines, we'd occasionally start up a rebuilt engine with no exhaust connected to the exit manifold (or extractors depending on the build).

The sound was incredibly loud.

If you can, record the sound with your phone (recording a quick video is probably the easiest way) and post it here.
 
i have audio but not sure how to post it.

was driving normally, suddenly the sound started, its directly related to the engine, when driving on the battery or coasting all is normal. The sound is in synch with the engind revs its not a rattle or anything. No warning lights, no loss of power, just heavy vibrations and the sound is deafening. Opening the hood and putting my ear next to it the engine itself sounds normal, its something behind/under the engine but the sound is in perfect synch with the engine itself.
 
i checked a video of an engine without an exhaust, sounds near identical. Wouldnt that trip a warning light tho?

Some recent history on the car. Few months ago someone backed his van into my car and the towhook pierced the radiators it was fixed by a mechanic appointed by the insurence company. iam mentioning it because if it could be related the insur will cover it, otherwise i sinoly cant afford to get it fixed
 
I can't quite make out the details from your video.

Is that the place where the engine pipe meets the exhaust pipe?

If it is, that's an easy fix. You need an 'o ring' gasket (AKA Exhaust Pipe Seal Ring), which looks like a metal doughnut, and the bolts (or nuts) that secure the two pieces together.

Here's an example:

If the fittings have dropped off, a quick trip to a wrecker could find you a new set.

Yea, havent been able yet to properly crawl under there but it seems to have just popped off there. Its safe to drive this way right?
 
I find it weird that your first port of call is a website and not a mechanic?
nothing weird about that? think Temo Raitinen down the road has ever touched a hybrid? il trust him to lift a suspension on a 90s volvo but i put my money on the people like Andy knowing more from a simple description than my local mechanic might from taking the thing apart.

friend brought in a modern diesel once and it took the mechanic here 6 attempts over 3 months (all billed) to figure out some sensor had gone bad. By that point half the components in the engine bay had been diagnosed as "the problem" and juryrigged in some way.

beggars cant be choosers but there is a reason most people here either own an old volvo or do their own repairs.

I think Temo Raitinen has probably seen an exhaust fall apart. Being a hybrid doesn't make it special.

From other posts on other sites, what usually happens is that something breaks off so a visit to an exhaust specialist is probably required.
I have a 2023 PHEV which I bought new in Oct 2023, I am curious how you found the service manual URL site name. The reason I ask is that the Mitsubishi dealership which was in my area which I used for years is no longer a Mitsubishi dealership center! The closest to me now is about 100 miles away. Access to a manual like this would be helpful if I have a minor problem.
Please advise. Thank you.

I 'think' I got that particular link from a Facebook group.
As I havent connected to facebook in over a Year I'm not able to verify.

The last time I looked there weren't that many ressources out there that were giving information on 2023 and later models.
