How long can these cars last?

You haven't looked under your car have you? There is no propellor shaft, and no transfer case. The rear diff contains an electric motor instead. To be clear the PHEV has no gearing, no reduction range, and are totally incapable of high torque low speed 4WD. They are strictly townie 4WD for...

How long can these cars last?

A battery replacement costs 16% the cost of a new vehicle. It will probably give me an extra 30-50% life in the vehicle. I will (just) save the battery cost in petrol and electricity in 120kkm. It is not cheap, but it if you do not especially value a new vehicle, it is almost certainly well...

How long can these cars last?

189000 km. Zero mechanical problems in that time, except the spring that closes the charging flap won't stay put. That makes it hands down the most reliable vehicle I have owned. Still doing 20km, including hills. Battery is getting pretty buggered, and this shows as greater petrol consumption...

What features would you like to see added to the Outlander PHEV in the future?

A middle seat at the front instead of a 1L useless box. I know this will come as an astonishing revelation to car manufacturers, but I have to transport these things called "kids" and more generally people. Alternatively a big hole full of nothing between the seats like the Colt had.

    Blown plug on granny charger

It is of course possible that it is an industrial unit with a datasheet, and a specific rating of xxA continuous operation. Or it might be what it looks like - an RCD made for intermittent use on extension cables, that you might get from a big box store, of rather indeterminate internal design...

    Blown plug on granny charger

A primary function of the charge unit is as an RCD. As illustrated in the photo, there really is no point in plugging it directly into a cheap RCD. You are protecting nothing, and the cheap RCD is just increasing the number of connections and components that are not really suitable for...

    2013 model outlander phev

Like Andy, mine has done >180kkm with one trivial fault: the charge door spring won't stay put. However the battery is now pretty knackered. Efficiency is worse than before, but remains pretty good for an SUV size vehicle. You should ask yourself how long you expect to keep it and how many...

PHEV for Australian camping, light offroad

My 2015 Outlander has very limited stall torque compared to traditional off road vehicles like a Mazda Demio. I had an unpleasant moment where I went around a gate through a steep grassy dip (in the middle of nowhere). The Outlander got to the bottom, and simply could not roll it's wheels up...

    Portable charger not working

I have had several cable failures over the years in my 3 portable chargers: - car cable thin signal wire broke in handle where it bends at the end. - car cable broke at cable gland of charger - mains cable broke just outside cable gland of charger (twice)

    Compulsory traction battery servicing?

Mine also had the battery removed and a battery seal replacement early in my ownership, perhaps around that mileage. (so probably 2016/17) I was wondering at the time if it was a rort they would try to pull annually, but it was a one off. I haven't been unhappy with the servicing (sometimes...

3rd party battery for 2014 Outlander

Also in Auckland NZ, and looking at this. Electrically, the discharge current rating (500A) and the cell resistance (1mohm) may matter. Since your Itchy can't fast charge, you don't have to worry about that rating. I'm not sure what the maximum current drawn from the battery is - mine was never...

Replaced the traction battery's modules - success

Hi Matt, I'm in Auckland too, and would love to discuss this with you, as I have been looking at ways of doing it. My Itchy is reaching a point of noticeably degraded efficiency and performance, and I need to either change the cells or retire it to occasional use.
