One more 'sleep' to getting my 4H, excited!

One thing has me wondering, what happens if you try to drive away with the charger plugged in the car is there just a warning or will it not let you at all?

Does it matter if its charging or not at the time?

Of course I am always on the ball so could never do such a thing, its my wife bless her, getting a bit past it...

Excuse me whilst I remove stiletto from my ear...

For now I only intend to charge with the supplied charger which will remain at home as there will be nowhere to plug in where I go daily. Here is my dedicated charge socket and power monitoring circuit I put together...

Rest assured you cannot drive off with the cable attached whether its charging or not. I have only done it once to the amusement of my wife  , but got in to drive off and forgot I had just plugged it in. I comes up with a message on the dash and will not engage drive. Anyone else done it?

Thank you. I suspected it would be so. Mind you, just think of the EV range you would get if you had a long enough cable

That's a natty monitor unit! Where do I get one, and how much? Got a spare for me? I'll pay the postage! ;)

Got the module from China on Aliexpress, loads around for about £14!

Stick it in a box (I used an ordinary outdoor junction box), two wires for the Live and Neutral need connecting from the module to across the Live and Neutral at the socket and it comes with a current transformer you just slip over the live anywhere and also connect to the module. I also included earthing and a fuse for peace of mind. I have checked it and its very accurate, even remembers the kw/h after a power cut.

If your OK with simple electronics/electrics and know how to wire safely its a doddle.

I do need to correct it slightly, mine is showing a residual 1W as stupidly I fitted the current transformer before where the module is spliced in instead of after, so its showing its own consumption! simple fix. A

If you had an untethered box with a separate cable, and the cable was connected only to the car, then also you could not drive away.

This topic has reminded me of the simple electric vehicles we once had at my old place of work. While plugged in using a 13amp socket that was switched on, the on charge light would be lit and you could not switch the vehicle on. But if the socket was switched off but the plug still in, you could still drive off!! Kept the electrical department busy replacing plugs and leads.
Thankfully the PHEV is a bit more advanced. I'm certain that it knows that the plug is in the car socket regardless weather power is on or off. It cannot be any thing to do with the two flaps (one over the socket and the metal fuel flap), as I have driven off with them open!

I also like the posh display unit BoEngineer has installed. It can also be found on EBay at

There is a resistance mounted in the type 1 connector between the proximity pin and the (if I am not mistaken) ground pin. That way the car can detect the connector, more than it detects the cable.

Hah, anko, actually I just wanted to write a similar answer.

How you like this for pranking your fellow EV Drivers (Type 1):

Always have a few of these in your pocket:

and slip one in the Type 1 socket (between ground and proximity) of the car you want to prank and close the carging cap again.

The poor fellow will not be able to move his EV an inch ;)

Btw:
I installed something similar into my mobile ICCB:

My problem is the reversed - getting the wife to plug in to charge.
She's burning fuel like crazy and in some magical way the fuel tank is always empty when I need the car.
Weird cause I had a long session with her explaining how the car works and how to drive EV only.

I have planned for this, I am fitting a device to dispense chocolate from the glove box when it detects a charge has begun.

:)

Had a talk with the wife this morning. Apparently she hit Save as that's what I told her to do.
I explained that she's supposed to use the Save button on freeways only. Not all the time. Duh!

I found a lipstick in the car. A hostile take-over!?

I'll have one of those, too, please. How about a voucher scheme for shoes? That'll bring the ladies into line!

Haha. In the Netherlands, we have actually discusses this as a potential anti-theft device. But then to have it implemented by a hidden switch somewhere in the car.

That's not a bad idea! Easy to install the switch - there is an inspection panel inside the car for the charging point connector - plenty of room in there to install a small switch.
