Hi, I have bought a used Phev 2.0 3h(2015) car recently. My understanding (from other posts) is that Phev has 45 litre tank, howvere, the max you can fill is 39 litres.

My question is that when I fill the tank completely. the car is showing an estimated total mileage of 360miles. Is this mileage based on 39 litres tank? So, that I can do my mpg calculation based on 39 litres, if that is the case.

The tank is 45 litres, so I just assumed that is how much you can put in. I’ve regularly filled it up with >40 litres from the pump so not sure where this 39 litre figure comes from ?

In any event, if you are going to do some calculations of mpg, then you need to base it on what you actually achieve, rather than the quoted range so it doesn’t matter whether its 39 or 45. Fill it up to the brim, reset your trip computer, drive it around and then fill it to the brim again and you can calculate your exact mpg. Or if you want to rely on the car calculating it for you, just reset the ‘Manual’ trip on MMCS and it will show you your mpg from the last time you reset it. (Based on my own calculations using the brim to brim method, I find that the MMCS figure is reasonably accurate)

The range quoted on the display is incredibly pessimistic for some reason. I did an 800 mile round trip at the weekend, and at one stage when I filled it to the brim the range was quoted as 253 miles, which only equates to c. 25mpg. In actual fact I was able to drive 300+ miles on that tank, at an average of closer to 35 mpg.

I'm not sure that it is "pessimistic" - it is just inaccurate. It makes a half-hearted attempt at learning your driving pattern in order to calculate a more meaningful figure and almost always gets it wrong!

Yes, but if was merely inaccurate then it should sometimes show figures which are wildly higher than can actually be achieved ? I’ve never seen it estimate anything higher than I can actually achieve, it always shows a lower figure than I can get in practice.

For avoidance of doubt, I’m not talking about the estimated EV range, which I agree is a pure guess and can be higher or lower than the actual figure. I’m referring to the total range, and in the case I mentioned above I had no battery left therefore the entire predicted range was based on usage of petrol. Having driven hundreds of miles on the motorway, at 35mpg actual, I’m baffled as to why it thinks that a full tank (of approx. 10 gallons) can only provide a range of 250 miles !
