Comparing the PHEV with a Tesla Model Y.

Interesting - thanks for taking the time to share. Now we've both retired, we're looking at what we need in the way of cars. Our 65k-mile ZOE is now down to 55 miles in winter, and our 92k-mile PHEV is down to 12 miles on the GOM. Our problem is that we still want to travel around mainland...

8 years of battery use and counting....

We bought our January 2015 4h at 2 years old with 40k on the clock. I would guess it had been a company car and not charged as much for 20k miles a year. It's now done 92k miles, and the battery is definitely suffering: we get a max range of 12-14 miles at this time of year

    Jump starting outlander phev 2016

Except if the 12V battery is flat, the car won't charge as it needs the 12V battery to physically connect the drive battery into the circuit and start the computers to manage the charge

How long take the pre-heat your car

10 minutes should be fine unless the temperature is exceedingly low: we used it in -12C last winter and it was fine. The problem we had was that it depleted the drive battery - it draws up to 4kW initially, which is far more than the 2.4kW granny could provide for a full-ish battery, and more...

    Jump starting outlander phev 2016

The 12V battery's main job is to power up the computers when the car is switched on, and then to connect the drive battery into the circuit. After that, the 12V battery is basically redundant as DC-DC converter runs the 12V side of things. So the power demands are low, which is why a dodgy 12V...

D-Method on really stubborn cars or the A-Method :)

It depends if you can call the Toyota hybrid system a CVT. That behaves exactly like a "regular" CVT, but uses fixed gears with a clever variability done by an epicyclic splitter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFVd_fCiO88

D-Method on really stubborn cars or the A-Method :)

Read Richi's FAQ section K. The video shows you how it all works and shows that it's not a CVT. That mileage on the GOM is pretty standard, and far better than I have on my 90k 2015 most of the time. Deleting the BMU data will fool the car into thinking it has a new battery. It will then try to...

front motor coolant CVT oil change

Your info is for the Outlander fitted with a CVT transmission - not available in the UK. Anyway the PHEV does not have that transmission, and it certainly does not have an oil filter for that oil! It merely has a transmission with fixed gears and clutches, like a regular automatic transmission...

D-Method on really stubborn cars or the A-Method :)

First of all there is no CVT  Secondly, why would you delete the BMU data so that you can trash your battery to gain a few extra miles for the next month or two? And then why on earth would you do it again?

front motor coolant CVT oil change

As always, Richi's FAQ is a great source of information. There's a thread about it on the UK PHEV FB page with links to the global page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/342911965900842/permalink/935422056649827/ It's unclear from your wording, but you know it's not a CVT, don't you? There are...

    2013 Japanese PHEV and Charging

The PHEV will only ever draw a maximum of 3.6kW (not 7kW) from a type 1 AC charger if it is able, as that is all it has been designed to manage. If you connect it to a 7kw, 22kW or 43kW charge, it will still only take a maximum of 3.6kW. If the charger is setup for less than 3.6kW, it will take...

Phone app won't connect to car

Have a look at Richi's FAQ - section E. You can only have 2 devices stored by the car. As your phone is now "new", you may need to remove both the old ones before you can add a "new" one

    RemoteApp

Certainly not in the UK. The base 3h had no electric heater and no wifi

    Split Gatorstrut

Get your local garage to quote - I would expect to pay well under half that fitted. I had it done a couple of years ago at a Mitsubishi garage during a service, and it was way less than that!

    Replacement 12v battery

Many will fit, but it doesn't mean they are safe!!!! Because it's mounted underneath the rear boot floor, it is treated as being an internal battery, so has to meet stricter standards than ones mounted in the boot or engine bay.

    Split Gatorstrut

The gaiters that cover the moving parts of the front struts/shocks split far too easily. You can ignore them, but they are there for a reason, and the seals will wear far more rapidly, so replacement is recommended. It can be done by any competent mechanic as there's no HV involved. But I'd...

Not using phev for 6 months- how to leave if so it starts when one returns.

I know it's not the same, but we left ours for 2 months. I left the drive battery at around half and didn't do anything special to the 12V battery. However I did get someone to simply start the car while we were away - they just did it after 6 weeks and just left it running for 5 minutes. The...

Is the Chademo port still usable in N. America?

You can do it now. It's part of the Chademo standard that power flow is bi-directional. All you need is a £5k Chademo DC installation at home and you're up and running

What CAN I tow with PHEV

Very late to this, but you can test the lack of torque from a standing start quite easily. I reversed up to a standard UK kerb outside a shopping arcade and stopped with both rear wheels resting against it. Someone then parked blocking me from driving straight out, so I tried reversing up the...
